No More Digital Comics For PSP, Sony Shutting It Down

Hope you got your fill of the digital comics on the PSN, because the service may be closing down for good.

A reader has sent us an announcement from SCEA, saying that the Comic Store for PSP "will no longer be available after October 30, 2012." We don't know if the service will continue on the Vita or other platforms but as of the end of October, we do know PSP users won't be able to access the digital comic section any longer. Here's another snippet from the release, evidently sent via email:

"After this date users will be unable to purchase comic content from the PS Store's Comic Store. Where licenses permit, previously purchased or downloaded content will still be available for download until mid- January 2013. After this date users will no longer be able to re-download any previously purchased content. You can, however back up your content using Media Go."

Me, I never got into comics as a kid so I don't care much. But I'm wondering if comics fans really took to this...it doesn't seem like they did, as this announcement appears to imply that the service wasn't very successful. I dunno, I get the feeling that hardcore comic fans would vastly prefer the physical copies, yes?

Thanks, Sunny!

Apple Website No Longer Calls Maps ?Most Powerful? Service Available

apple-maps-ios-6-descriptionFollowing continued criticism of Apple Maps, CEO Tim Cook directly addressed the issue with an apology and admission that there are some excellent alternatives out there available to iOS users. With that, the Cupertino company has also made a much more low-key acknowledgment on its website by erasing its ?most powerful mapping service ever? claim from its Maps description.

As you can see in the Before and After picture above, the company made one final edit to the service?s explanation. Apple previously claimed Maps in iOS 6 was the best of the best, but after a number of scathing reports to the contrary, Apple has wised up and changed its tune on the matter. Both actions and words are speaking quite loudly for Apple at the moment.

With the last loose-end tied up, this may put the whole debacle to rest as Apple moves toward creating a more consistent experience. It was never going to be up-to-par with the more established mapping services out there, and Apple is openly conceding that quite a bit of work still needs to be done in order to offer the ?most powerful? service around.

Sikh Genocide Case Against India's Congress Party Moves Another Step Forward in US Court

Sikh Genocide Case Against India's Congress Party Moves Another Step Forward in US Court

NEWS REPORTS

?

?

?

US Federal Judge Robert Sweet has ruled that the Congress Party of India has been "properly served" with the summons in the November 1984 Sikh Genocide case.

Last week, on denying the motion of the Congress (I) to dismiss the Sikh Genocide case for lack of service, the court held that the plaintiffs' evidence establishes that service was effected properly in accordance with the Hague Convention.

Since the filing of the law suit by "Sikhs For Justice" against Congress (I) for conspiring, aiding, abetting and carrying out genocidal attacks on Sikhs during November 1984, the Congress party has been challenging the US Court's jurisdiction at every juncture - and has lost at every juncture so far.

Citing the steps taken by Sikhs for Justice (?SFJ?) to effect service on the Congress, Judge Sweet, in his 82 page ruling, held that "the Plaintiffs have demonstrated that they complied with the Hague Convention procedures and that any failure of compliance was solely on the Central Authority to participate in the process. In addition the INC (Congrees Party) was aware of the litigation and had actual notice of the suit."

?Under these circumstances the INC was served in accordance with the Hague Convention and service is valid," concluded Judge Sweet.

While ruling on the Congress (I)'s claim that US Court lacks personal jurisdiction to hear November 1984 Sikh Genocide, Judge Sweet held that the plaintiffs have? yet to establish personal jurisdiction of the US Court over Congress (I).?

However, Judge Sweet granted the Plaintiffs? request for "jurisdictional discovery" to determine the relationship between Indian National Overseas Congress (INOC) and Indian National Congress (INC)".

However, while granting jurisdictional discovery, Judge Sweet stated: "Plaintiffs? allegations demonstrate a relationship between the INC and INOC to justify jurisdictional veil piercing," which is essential to determine the court's personal jurisdiction over the Congress Party.

According to Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, legal advisor to SFJ, since the filing of the Sikh Genocide case, the rights group has been approached by hundreds of survivors, witnesses and victims of November 1984, who are willing to become party to the pending case against Congress.

SFJ will file a motion before the US Court to include additional plaintiffs and issue a "class certification" in the pending Genocide case. The class will consist of resident and non-resident Sikh men, women and children who survived the attacks in November 1984 and the lawful heirs and claimants of those men, women and children that did not survive.

The class will also consist of Sikhs whose homes, businesses, gurdwaras and personal property was damaged, added the attorney.

SFJ has also announced that it will file a complaint with the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, for allowing S.M. Krishna, a senior Congress (I) leader and India?s External Affairs Minister into the United States, knowing the Congress (I) leader?s involvement in leading attacks on Sikhs during the November 1984 pogroms.

"S.M. Krishna's entry and presence in the United States will be in violation of section 212(a)(3)(E)(ii) & (iii) of INA and section 604 of The International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 which prohibit entry into United States of any individual who is member of an organization involved in human rights violations,? explained Gurpatwant Singh, who practices human rights law in the United States.

According to SFJ, the "US Court's ruling regarding proper service on Congress (I) has brought the victims a step closer to establishing that Congress conspired, aided, abetted and carried out the genocidal attacks on Sikhs during November 1984 in which more than thirty thousand Sikhs were killed".

Shared genetic link in psychiatric and movement disorders

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Fewer than 100 people in the world are known to be affected by a movement disorder called rapid-onset dystonia-parkinsonism (RDP), but its symptoms are life-changing. Seemingly normal young people are suddenly and dramatically unable to control movement of their arms or legs and have trouble speaking or swallowing. A normal life is nearly impossible.

RDP is caused by a genetic mutation (ATP1A3) that often runs in families. Now Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center researchers believe that same genetic predisposition might also be associated with psychiatric problems, such as anxiety, mood disorders and substance abuse/dependence.

Allison Brashear, M.D., chair of neurology at Wake Forest Baptist, and the lead investigator in this four-year, $2.5 million study funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), said this is one of the few studies to look at this rare condition that has no known treatment. "RDP often occurs suddenly after a stressful episode, such as running a marathon or childbirth," said Brashear. "Patients become severely disabled over hours to days and do not recover."

Brashear and nine other Wake Forest Baptist scientists, as well as colleagues from Harvard Medical School and Mount Sinai School of Medicine, enrolled 56 individuals for this study. Twenty-three of the RDP patients were related, three RDP patients were unrelated.

Of the 29 participants with the genetic mutation, 26 had dystonia symptoms and three were carriers, but without the motor symptoms; the remaining 27 participants without the mutation, were enrolled as the control group.

Following standard physical examination and behavioral assessment, Brashear's team found that individuals with the mutation but without the motor symptoms did not report any history of psychiatric disorder, while those with dystonia symptoms reported anxiety (48 percent; control 41 percent), mood (50 percent; control 22 percent), psychotic (19 percent; control 0 percent) and substance abuse/dependence (38 percent; control 27 percent).

Researchers concluded that ATP1A3 mutations cause a wide spectrum of motor and nonmotor symptoms and that psychotic symptoms tended to develop before or simultaneous to the beginning of motor dysfunction. Further, the team believes the findings suggest psychiatric disorders may be another expression of the genetic mutation. Brashear said there are also clinical implications as a result of this study and suggested that those who deal with patients with psychosis, particularly in families with a history of dystonia-parkinsonism, consider the genetic mutation as a possible contributor to the mental illness.

Most Popular Money Making Methods On The Internet

Earning money is a person?s primary concern in life. He or she needs to pay bills, feed the family, buy expensive things, etc. Nowadays, the internet is an inextricable part of a person?s life and people stay online for a large part of the day. If this time spent on the internet could also be utilized to make money, nothing could be better. There are several means by which this particular objective can be achieved. All that is needed is a personal computer and some time to spare, coupled with a burning desire to succeed.

Presented here is a discussion of some of the methods that can be used to earn money on the internet.

Getting Paid To Read Emails

This is one of the earliest and most surefire ways to earn money online. All that is needed is a working email address with a valid address provider like Yahoo! or Hotmail or Rediff. It is a very simple task. Advertisers and service providers from all around the world pay people to view advertisements that they send via email. All that a person needs to do is open the email and click on the given link. Every email read adds some money to an online account which is then transferred electronically to your own bank account. However, a single email will fetch a person not more than $1. The best method to increase such income is to refer people to the website and increase your referral chain. The original person gets a certain percentage of the referral income as well.

Taking Online Surveys

Marketing companies are very eager to know about the likes and dislikes of their consumers. This way they can channelize their resources into manufacturing products that will actually be appreciated by consumers. They do not want to waste time and energy making things that nobody wants to use. Hence they design questionnaires and surveys to help gauge the popularity of their products or services. They also pay people who take time to answer those surveys. This is how one can earn through taking online surveys. The payment depends on the length of the survey taken.

Make Money By Testing Games

This is an extremely popular method of money making today. Though it may sound like a dream, it is true indeed. People and companies will pay you to test games and applications they design, before going public with them. There are several people around the world who today earn millions by testing games and apps.

Promote Affiliate Products

This method helps one earn the largest online bucks. The aforesaid ways are good no doubt, but barring a few cases, money earned by those methods reach stagnancy after a certain point of time. Affiliate marketing has an edge in this respect. As the affiliate chain goes on branching and branching more, the percentage income of every node or person in the system increases proportionally. However, a clear knowledge of how the affiliate marketing system works is very necessary in this case.

Article Writing

This is a rage among online money makers nowadays. It includes a huge gamut of activities. From writing product reviews to blog posts or lifestyle articles, a person can write on almost any topic that catches his fancy and get paid for it. This job is also totally freelance based and people generally get paid depending on the number of words they write in a given time period. The main criteria is that the quality of articles should be decent and although referencing can be done off the internet, they should never be entirely copied. Plagiarism is a strict restriction in this particular field.

Sell Pictures

A lot of money can also be made by selling pictures that a person takes on the internet. This is a new method of earning money that is catching up nowadays. People today take lots of pictures on their digital cameras and a surprising number of those pictures turn to to be of really superior quality, owing to excellent editing tools as well. Hosting these pictures on blogs or personal websites for sale is a good method to make money. Magazines and periodicals often buy pictures from such websites for use in their publications.

Online Tutoring

This is another innovative method of earning money that has gained popularity among college students today. They use applications like Skype or other video chat softwares to tutor other students at remote locations on previously worked out timings. Often they also make tutoring videos and send them to their subscribers. Their payment gets directly transferred to their bank accounts via electronic fund transfer facilities.

These were an introduction to some of the most popular money making methods of the day, whereby a person can earn a quick buck while using the internet to supplement or add to his or her regular income.

If GM Apples Don't Brown, How Can You Tell If They're Rotten?

In the fairytale world, a shiny red apple can lead to a poisonous end. But some see two genetically engineered green apple varieties, poised to become the first to gain U.S. Department of Agriculture approval, as similar harbingers of doom.

Okaganan Specialty Fruits, Inc., the company that has developed Granny Smith and Golden Delicious varieties that don't go brown when you slice them, says the fears are overblown and the apples are safe to eat.

Now, we've reported extensively on the heated debate over labeling genetically engineered food, and there's no denying that genetically-modified (GM) foods are a polarizing issue. But, would an apple that doesn't turn brown prevent us from telling whether it's rotten? The short answer is no. For the long answer, read on.

?

The non-browning trait aims to please consumers who don't like brown apples or the off taste from the preservatives frequently used to maintain color and fresh appearance in packages of pre-sliced apples, says Neal Carter, Okanagan's president. "Ultimately, we just want people to eat more apples," he says. Carter also argues the innovation would help apple slice producers, who can lose up to half of their product due to browning during production.

Nevertheless, as the public comment period on a petition to approve these apples closed last month, many consumers worry ? are they safe to eat?

First let's look at the physical properties of apples. No matter how you slice it, every apple turns brown eventually. "When their flesh is cut, the oxygen in the air interacts with chemicals in the flesh of the apple," says Susan Brown, a plant scientist at Cornell University in Geneva, N.Y. An enzyme called polyphenol oxidase (PPO) makes melanin, an iron-containing compound that gives apple cells a brown tinge. The same type of "oxidative" browning happens in the browning of tea, coffee, or mushrooms, explains Brown.

Within five minutes of slicing, browning can alter the taste and might not be as aesthetically pleasing, but it doesn't mean the apple is old or rotten.

To prevent oxidative browning, the GM apples developed by Okanagan stop PPO production with a man-made gene containing pieces of four natural PPO genes. An insertion with gene fragments is an automatic red flag for the apple cell ? usually the first step of viral attack ? so it chops up every sequence of DNA that looks like the suspicious fragment, and the apple flesh stays light.

"The beauty of this [process] is it's a natural plant defense mechanism," says Carter. Even when sliced, these apples stay clear of browning for about two weeks ? that's roughly the same extended lifespan as apple slices from McDonald's and Burger King, which use lemon juice and calcium ascorbate to prevent browning.

But if the apple doesn't go brown, then how do you tell if it's rotten? An apple with just oxidative browning isn't automatically rotten. Rotting comes from a fungal or bacterial infection - which causes the apple to go either mushy or dry. Infecting spores, not melanin, also give the flesh a dark brown hue. So, taking PPO out of the equation won't make a rotten apple appear pristine. "'Bad' apples will still be evident," says Brown. Rotting GM apples look rotten and turn brown from a bacterial or fungal infection the same as a conventional apple.

But, Bill Freese, a science policy analyst at the Center for Food Safety, notes that some studies in tomatoes have shown that silencing PPO impacts a plant's susceptibility to diseases and invasive insects because the enzyme may play a role in plant defense reactions.

Since we already have hybrid "low-browning" varieties and successful preservative treatments, some people wonder if we really need an apple that doesn't go brown. "We fully support genetic and genomics research," says Mark Gedris, the US Apple Association's director of communications. "But we haven't heard customers calling for a non-browning GE apple."

From nutrient value to taste, these apples are indistinguishable from a normal one, say Carter and Brown. If they do gain USDA approval, whether people will buy them is another story. "It's up to the consumer to decide," Brown says.

As we've reported before, much of our processed foods that contain soy or corn are genetically-modified, but fresh produce has been a tougher sell - anybody remember the Flavr Savr tomato?

I posted?Creating a Specific Source List Report in RootsMagic 5 yesterday, in which I wanted a list of ALL source citations for one specific source - in this case, the Vital Records book for Westminster, Massachusetts. ?I was able to create a list of 171 source citations for the specific book so that I could add or edit the source citation details.

In my post, I noted that I hoped that Russ Worthington would do something similar using Family Tree Maker 2012. ?Russ explored the "Source Bibliography" report and the "Source Usage Report" in his post?FTM2012 - Source and Citation Clean Up. ?In the latter, he showed just one source and one citation in what was probably a long list of source citations for many Sources.

I decided to follow Russ's example, so I opened Family Tree Maker 2012 and figured out one way to do the task, with the help of the Help menu item for "Source Usage Report," "To select the individuals to include," and "Filter individuals" pages.

Here is the process I used to create a "Source Usage Report" for one specific source (the Westminster vital records book):

1) ?In the "Publish" workspace, and the "Source Reports" link, four report types are available.?

2) ?I selected the "Source Usage Report" on the screen above, and clicked on the "Create Report" button. ?Based on past experience, I quickly clicked on the "Selected individuals" radio button on the right panel in the "Individuals to include" area. ?Then I clicked on the "Individuals to include" button and the "Filter Individuals" window opened, but with no persons selected. ?To select persons, I clicked on the "Filter in >" button in the center of the panel, and the "Filter Individuals by Criteria" window opened:
For my Filter, I chose "Vital facts," ?Search where = "Birth," and selected "Place" (the list appears when you select a fact type), selected "Contains," Value = "Westminster" and ?clicked on "OK.

3) ?The list of Persons with a Place = "Westminster" in their Facts appeared:

There were 170 of them.

4) ?I clicked on "OK" and the "Source Usage Report" for the 170 persons appeared:

The screen above is page 1 of a 46 page report. ?The first source listed is for the California Death Index (I'm assuming because the person listed died in California, but had a Westminster place name in her list of Facts).

Not all of the items on the list were "Birth" Facts - there were Name, Birth, Marriage and Death Facts in the "Source Usage Report."

The sources are listed in alphabetical order (with quote marks ahead of the letter A). ?I need to search for the Westminster vital records book down the list.

5) ?Eventually, down on page 31, the listings for the Source of interest, the Westminster vital records book, began:

The source citations include Source Title, the Repository, the Citation for the specific detail citation (e.g., the page number), and the entries with that source citation.

There are 10 pages of source citations for the Westminster vital records book. ?I could print just those pages out and use them to add or to improve my source citation details.

This task was much more difficult to perform in Family Tree Maker 2012 than in RootsMagic 5, in my opinion. ?The "Source Usage Report" in FTM 2012 did not meet my needs to list source citations for a specific Source. ?I had to cobble together a process and accept the output in order to obtain a usable report. ?This is a report that I really want to use, and I'm sure other researchers need it too.

Ideally, Family Tree Maker would add a Source Report for a specific Source. ?Is it hiding in the list of reports in the "Publish" workspace, but I cannot find it? ?If it is, would someone please clue me in? ?

Jimmy Fallon sings 'History of TV Theme Songs'

NBC

Jimmy Fallon joined the cast of "Guys With Kids" for a rundown of TV's greatest theme songs on "Late Night."

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

In the grand tradition of Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake's "History of Rap" (all three parts), the "Late Night" host gave another music genre a sound summary on Tuesday night's show -- with a little help from his friends.

Joined by the cast of "Guys With Kids," the sitcom co-created and produced by Fallon, he kicked of a "History of TV Theme Songs."

After lamenting the fact that many shows just don't have a true theme tune anymore, Fallon pulled out a microphone and began belting out the theme to "The Jeffersons." Before long, Anthony Anderson, Jesse Bradford and Zach Cregger took the stage and contributed to the remarkable roundup.

They cycled through the TV greats, including the themes for "All in the Family," "Golden Girls," "Friends," "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," "Facts of Life," "Good Times," "Greatest American Hero," "Three's Company," "Sandford & Sons," "Full House," "Saved By the Bell," "Happy Days" and "Cheers."

Watch the clip above for the full salute to TV songs.

"Guys With Kids," which features a theme song sung by Fallon himself, airs Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. on NBC.

We've had rap and now TV theme songs -- which music genre should Jimmy Fallon deliver a "History" of next? Tell us on our Facebook page.

NEW YORK (September 24, 2012) Columbia University will award the 2012 Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize to Richard Losick, PhD, Joe Lutkenhaus, PhD, and Lucy Shapiro, PhD, for their collective work on the intricate, dynamic, three-dimensional organization of bacterial cells. Prior to their discoveries, the tiny bacterial cell was thought to be a "bag of enzymes" that held a jumbled mess of proteins and DNA within a "cell sap." Established in 1967, the Horwitz Prize is Columbia University's top honor for achievement in biological and biochemistry research.

The Horwitz Prize is widely considered to be a precursor to a Nobel. Of the 87 Horwitz Prize winners to date, 42 have gone on to receive Nobel prizes. To see a list of previous awardees, please click here.

"We congratulate Drs. Losick, Lutkenhaus, and Shapiro on their important work that has expanded understanding of the life of a cell and are pleased to award them our 2012 Horwitz Prize," said Lee Goldman, MD, dean of the faculties of health sciences and medicine at Columbia University Medical Center and executive vice president for health and biomedical sciences at Columbia University. "In this 45th year since the prize was established, these awardees join an elite group of scientists who have contributed greatly to the basic science that is the foundation of efforts to better understand diseases, develop new treatments, and improve the lives of patients."

"The research of these three superb pioneers has led to major insights into the biochemistry and molecular biology of the living cell. It has helped establish the simple bacterial cell as one of the most powerful models for understanding the cycle of cell life and death," said Gerard Karsenty, MD, PhD, chair of the Horwitz Prize Committee, and chair of the Department of Genetics and Development at Columbia University Medical Center.

Dr. Joe Lutkenhaus began studying the genetics of bacterial cell division in the model organism E. coli, which led to his discovery of a gene, FtsZ, which is essential for cell division. He showed that FtsZ is rate limiting for cell division and is the target of various cell division inhibitors. In a seminal Nature paper (Bi and Lutkenhaus, 1991), the localization of FtsZ is described as a ring at the future division site. This was the first demonstration in bacteria of an intracellular protein localized at a specific cellular location for a specific purpose. It also led to the discovery that bacteria contained cytoskeletal proteins, once the provenance of eukaryotic cells.

Shortly after, Drs. Shapiro and Losick published their first collaboration in Cell (1993), on the development and behavior of bacteria. Over the years, they have collaborated on eight original papers on the structure and biology of the bacterial cell, which have been published in leading peer-reviewed journals and have been influential.

Dr. Shapiro is credited with addressing the question of how one-dimensional DNA can encode and be translated into a complex three-dimensional organism. She showed, for the first time, that bacterial DNA replication occurs in a spatially organized way and that cell division depends on this spatial organization and on segregation of the DNA to opposite ends of the cell. She also showed that the cell cycle requires the precise coordination and timing of multiple biochemical and morphological events, each of which occurs at a specific stage in the cell cycle and requires the expression and function of a discrete set of genes.

In complementary work, Dr. Losick revealed the nature of three-dimensional regulation in bacterial cells, which provided a basis for understanding the properties of cellular asymmetry. He also dissected the gene regulatory mechanisms that govern systems for cellular differentiation. In addition, he discovered the interplay of spatial dynamics and regulatory mechanisms that yields morphologically differentiated cells with different cell fates.

"The contributions these three scientists have made to the fields of cell biology and microbiology make them excellent choices for the 2012 Horwitz Prize. Their visionary work has yielded novel and fundamental insights into the biochemistry and molecular biology of the living cell," said Michael Purdy, PhD, executive vice president for research, Columbia University. "In addition, letters supporting these scientists have noted their dedication to the students they have trained over the years. We are proud to honor scientists who embody a core value of Columbia Universitythe training of future generations of researchers and scientists."

More than 100 million iOS 6 updates - Know Your Cell

Apple announced that it has seen over 100 million iOS devices update to iOS 6 in less than a week.

Apple released iOS 6 to the general public Sept. 19 and it is available for the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, new iPad, iPad 2, the previous iPod touch and it launched on the iPhone 5 and the latest iPod touch. We've broken down the top iOS 6 features here?but the latest update includes built-in Facebook integration, improved Siri, FaceTime over cellular capabilities and more.?

This 100 million iOS 6 update figure is especially impressive when you compare it to the competiton. It appear as if a quarter of iOS users are on the latest version of the software whereas only 1.2 percent of Android users are using Android Jelly Bean. If you include Android Ice Cream Sandwich, 22.1 percent of Android users are on the latest or second-latest version.?

Apple has a few advantages over Google when it comes to updating software, as the company has direct control over when and how its updates get released. For the most part, if you had a compatible device on Sept. 19, you could get iOS 6 if you wanted to.?

It's a different story with Google and Android updates, as the search giant has multiple layers of abstraction to deal with. When it releases an update like Jelly Bean, it has to wait for handset makers to test it, customize it for their own proprietary user interface and then wait for carriers to approve the update for their networks.?
